My primary goal as an instructor is to help students approach complex policy problems with evidence, rigor, and compassion. Instead of teaching a set of facts, I aim to provide students with tools and analytical skills that they can use to understand the world – and create change within it.
Courses I regularly teach at the Batten School include:
Introduction to Public Policy
Institutional and Political Context of Public Policy
Politics of Development
Data Visualization in R
For my teaching, I have received UVA’s All-University Teaching Award, UVA Student Council’s Teaching Award, and the Batten School’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Before joining UVA, I received Princeton University’s Graduate Teaching Award (2016) for my work as a Quin Morton Teaching Fellow with the Princeton Writing Program.
Outside of my own classes, I am dedicated to increasing the quality of teaching at UVA. I currently serve as a Faculty Fellow with the Center for Teaching Excellence at UVA; and I co-organize the Batten School’s teaching brownbag series. On the research side, I am conducting a project, “Hoos Learn Together: Increasing Sense of Belonging in Large-Enrollment Courses,” which seeks to identify strategies to improve UVA students’ experiences in large courses.
